Richard A. Brodersen, 71, of Sherrard, IL, died Monday, March 2, 2015, at UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., 1301 4th Street, Orion. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2015, at the funeral home. Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded following the services and burial of cremains will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to his family for a fund to be established.

Richard was born on January 28, 1944, in Milwaukee, WI, the son of Edith Brodersen. He played college basketball for the University of Kentucky as well as Georgia Tech. He married Shirley Osburn on January 22, 1966, in Clinton, IA, and later married Tootie Hamerlinck Lough on December 19, 1998, in Sherrard.

Richard worked as a switchman and later as a yardmaster for the Rock Island Railroad. He retired in 1998 as an electrician for Exelon. Following his retirement, he also worked as a ranger for several golf courses and was a volunteer for the Mississippi Valley Blood Bank.

Richard enjoyed train watching, golfing, and fishing. He was a Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He especially loved spending time with his family and 4 wheeling with his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Edith Brodersen, and aunt, Dorothy (Earl) Mills.
