Richard Eugene Smarsty, 91, of Moline, IL, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at UnityPoint Health - Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, IL.
Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded and inurnment will be at National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family.
Richard was born on December 6, 1923, in Moline, IL, the son of George Joseph and Bertha Marie Thonn Smarsty. Following his mother's passing, he was raised by his father and stepmother, Mary Pearl Dunbar. He married Verna Pearl Hurdel in August of 1948, in Moline. They were married 64 years.
He had been employed at International Harvester as a General Foreman for over 30 years.
Richard enjoyed golf, watching the Chicago Bulls, and spending time with his family. He was always the first person awake in the morning and always got all of his chores done first before there was any relaxing.
He dearly loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his daughters, Suzy and Nancy; sons, Ron and Terry; grandchildren, Tina, Tessa, Phillip, Kimberly, Michael, Katelyn, and Taylor; great grandchildren, Zachary, Madison, Lydia, Alison, Megan, Kyle, Logan, Emily, Ethan, Grant, and Lauren.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; step mother; wife, Verna Pearl; infant daughter, Lydia Jean; brothers, Bill and George.
