Robert "Bob" Haines, 87, of East Moline formerly of Normal, Ill., died Friday, Feb. 22 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.
Services are 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, at Esterdahl Mortuary and Crematory Ltd, Moline. Visitation is from 10:00 a.m. until the service time. Burial will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. An additional memorial visitation will be held from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at the Carmody Flynn Williamsburg Funeral Home in Bloomington, Illinois. Memorials may be made to The Arc of the Quad Cities Area 9th Street, Rock Island, or the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa.
Robert Rollin Haines was born November 8, 1925, in Moline, the only child of Ira Rollin and Margaret (Kolb) Haines. Robert married Gretchen "Nonnie" Farrell on Jan. 24, 1948, at St. Mary's Rectory, Moline. They were married 63 years before her death, July 22, 2011.
Robert attended Moline Public Schools with the class of 1944 before graduating from Riverside Military Academy. He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific and later in the Atlantic as a midshipman and an officer. Robert also graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. and the University of Illinois in Marine and General Engineering.
Robert served as a professional engineer for more than 55 years, with 42 as a licensed professional engineer in six states. He worked for several Quad City consulting engineering firms. Robert retired from State Farm Insurance Company, Bloomington, in 1991 after 31 years as chief engineering consultant.
Nonnie and Bob resided in the Quad Cities until moving to Normal in 1973. He was a member of several professional engineering organizations, 1946 Class Agent for Kings Point Alumni, member of Moline American Legion Post 246, Bloomington Elks, and a 32nd degree Mason.
Robert had a great interest in aviation and held a pilot's license. Bob ran track at Kings Point competing at Madison Square Garden against world class runners. Later in life he ran in races participating in the Bix 7 until age 79.
Robert was very proud of his military service. He participated in the April 2012 Quad City Honor Flight and described the homecoming as one of the best experiences of his life. He enjoyed making things in his workshop, playing golf and being with his family.
Survivors include children; Stephen (Carol) and Patricia Haines of Moline, Robert M. (Cindy) of Bellaire Texas; sister in-law, Mary Kale of Milan; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
His parents, wife and his great-grandson, Kyle Roseman preceded him in death.
