Roy L. Nelson, 91, of Rockford, IL, died Tuesday, November 19, 2013, at Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center, Rockford, IL.
Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 23, 2013, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline, IL. Visitation will be from one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rock Island Memorial Park at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First Evangelical Free Church Deacon Fund.
Roy was born on January 10, 1922, in Moline, IL, the son of Martin and Anna K. (Johnson) Nelson, and was raised on a farm in Barstow. He married Helen V. Bowman on August 1, 1942, in Moline, IL, and she preceded him in death on August 28, 1981. Roy then married Dorothea Clope in 1984 and she preceded him in death on December 18, 1990. He later married Eldora Nyberg on November 16, 1991.
Prior to 1941, Roy worked for William & White. He later served in the United States Navy from 1944 - 1946, stationed in the Philippines. Roy retired from John Deere Harvester on May 1, 1981, after 40 years as a Tool and Die Maker.
Roy was a 70 year member of the First Evangelical Free Church, Moline, where he served on the Deacon Board. He was presently a member of the Rockford Evangelical Free Church.
