Saul Schiff, age 89, of Moline, died Sunday, June 17, 2012 at Hope Creek Care Center, East Moline.
Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at Tri City Jewish Center Hebrew Cemetery, Rock Island. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. Moline is assisting the family.
Saul was born March 25, 1923 in the Bronx, NYC, the son of William and Rose (Borgmann) Schiff. He grew up in Morristown, New Jersey and went to radio and television school in Newark, NJ, and was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 20. He was soon promoted to Corporal Technician. He married Holocaust survivor, Esther Stiller, on November 16, 1946 in Jersey City, NJ. They met in Germany when Saul was serving in the U.S. Army and Esther worked as a mess hall waitress in Freising, Germany. After his Army service, Saul worked in the family business Schiff Machine and Tool Company. In middle age he began attending college at night and graduated with honors from Newark College of Engineering, which is now the N.J. Institute of Technology. Saul was employed as a Mechanical Engineer at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, N.J. and later accepted a promotion to the Rock Island Arsenal where he retired in 1988. At the Rock Island Arsenal Saul was a Mechanical Engineer at the U.S. Army Armament Research Development and Engineering Center. Saul sang in the professional New Jersey Chorus, the Masterwork Chorus. He loved baseball, translating documents from German into English, singing, political commentary, and solving crossword puzzles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Jacob, Irving, and Isadore; and his sister, Sadie.
