Steve D. Spurgetis, 82, of Moline, IL, died Thursday, August 20, 2015, at St. Anthony's Nursing & Rehab, Rock Island, IL.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, August 28, 2015, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 2930 31st Avenue, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Trisagion Service at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, August 27, 2015, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Burial will be at National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal, where military honors will be conducted by Moline American Legion Post 246. Memorials may be made to the church.

Steve was born on April 29, 1933, in Lexington, NE, the son of James C. and Nikoletta Kasteliotis Spurgetis. He married Margit Lagerquist on September 8, 1963, in Moline, and she preceded him in death on October 29, 2013.

Steve was a veteran, having proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, from 1953-1955. During his time in the service he was stationed in Germany. He later became a member of the Moline VFW 2130 as well as the Moline American Legion Post 246.

In July of 1956, Steve joined the Moline Fire Department. After 27 years of dedicated service, he retired as Captain of Station 2. Following his retirement, Steve, served as the president of the Fire Department Pension Fund, the first president of the fire department retirees, a charter member of the Illinois Association of Retired Fire Fighters of Illinois, and a past officer at MFD Local 581. He was instrumental in creating the MFD memorial at Ben Butterworth to honor deceased fire fighters of Moline.

Steve served in many capacities of various organizations. He started first as the secretary treasurer and later became president of Moline Municipal Credit Union. During his time at the credit union, He and Rich Anderbery were instrumental in establishing payroll deductions which helped the credit union.

Steve served on the board of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, where he was a member. He also belonged to the Rock Island Elks 980, the Viking Club, and IARF.

Steve enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening, and crossword puzzles. He helped the Fire Department and city employees and Retirees to prepare and deliver food baskets to the needy each Thanksgiving - a very worthy cause shared by all.

Survivors include his stepdaughter, Sharon (Tony) Holmes, East Moline, IL; grandchildren, Tony (Kelly) Holmes, Jr., Aurora, IL, Nicole Holmes, Palm Harbor, FL, and Heather Holmes, East Moline, IL; great grandchildren, Tony Holmes, Bryce Holmes, Alyssa Holmes, Lucas Richards, Janalee Richards, and Braxton Anthony; great great grandchildren, Anthony Steven Joseph Holmes, III, Kaydyn Holmes, and Jordan Holmes; sister, Mary Spurgetis, Rock Island, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; 2 brothers; 1 sister.
