Vernal Munson

Vernal Munson, 83, of East Moline passed away November 7th, 2025, at her home.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 13th at 6pm, at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave. Moline. Visitation will take place 4-6 pm Thursday November 13th at Esterdahl Mortuary prior to services. Burial will take place at the Rock Island Arsenal Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Foundation.

Vernal was born in Clinton, Iowa on January 15th, 1942, to Vernald Hermann and Ethel Irene Leonard Thiessen.

She would go on to marry James Munson on August 14th, 1964 in Savanna, Illinois. She would work at Kennedy’s Tavern in Savanna, where she was part owner, before retiring in 1976. She would later work for the U.S. Government as a Contract and Logistics Specialist, retiring in 2002. She had many interests: baking, knitting, reading, cooking as well as gardening, with an interest both in flowers and vegetables, as well as taking care of her family.

Vernal is survived by her husband, James, son, Michael Scott (Brenda) Merrifield, MN, Grandson: Jeremiah (Debbie), Moline, Great-Grandson: Cayden, Moline, Siblings: Max Marsh (Debbie), Penny McGinnis, Sister-in-Law: Nickie Carruthers as well as numerous nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her Parents, Siblings: Karen Kooi, Donald Thiessen, Tommy Joe Marsh, and Stepfather: Jack Marsh, Mother-in-Law: Betty Lou Kennedy and Sister-in-Law: Lora Stoecker.
