Vernon Paul Bergstrand, affectionately called "Olie," of Moline, passed away peacefully at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf on Friday, May 17. He was 94.
Funeral services will be at Homewood Evangelical Free Church, 3303-60th Street, Moline at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 21. Visitation will be at the church two hours before the service. Burial is at Rose-Lawn Memorial Estate, Moline where military honors will be conducted by Moline American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to Homewood Evangelical Free Church or Youth Hope (Christian Friendliness Organization). Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. Moline is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Vernon was born on July 16, 1918, to Alfred and Carrie Miner Bergstrand in East Moline. He married Evelyn Clarke on Sept. 4, 1945. He graduated from UTHS in 1936 and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a tool and die maker and retired from John Deere Harvester in 1983.
He was an active member of the Evangelical Free Church for 60 years, serving as chairman, Sunday School teacher, Deacon and choir member, and was a charter member of Homewood Evangelical Free Church. He also served for several years on the Silvis Schools' Board of Education.
He enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and overseas as well, and loved those Chicago Cubs. Vernon is survived by his wife of 67 years and four sons, Tom (Julie) in Leominster, MA., Dick (Dee) in Columbia, MO., Ron (Marcia) in East Moline, and Jack in Atlanta, GA,; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two sisters, Betty Bergstrand in Chapel Hill, N.C., and Christa Bergstrand in Peoria, two sisters-in-law, Catherine Clarke in Silvis, and Virginia Krajnovich, Cupertino, CA., and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and a grandson.
