William H. Oates, (Britian), 92, of Moline, IL passed away at the Davenport Lutheran Home, June 8, 2013.
Visitation is Wednesday, June 12, 2013 from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline, IL with private service and burial at Rock Island National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Alzheimer's Association or The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Britian was born in Willard, Ohio on January 22, 1921 to Robert and Gertrude Godlove Oates. He attended schools in Willard, Ohio and Petersburg, West Virginia, graduating from William McKinley High School, Chicago, IL. Britian served in the US Coast Guard August 1942 to receiving honorable discharge February 1946. He worked for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad for 30 years starting as a brakeman and retiring as a locomotive engineer in August 1981. He was a member of the Free Masons and American Legion. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, spending winters in Florida with his siblings, and watching his Chicago sport teams - Bears, Cubs, Blackhawks, and Bulls. He truly enjoyed and loved his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and greatly loved by his family.
In 1945, Britian met the love of his life, Dorothy Neill, at a Cubs baseball game at Wrigley Field. They married in West Point, IL April 26, 1947.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years; daughters, Susan Myers and Shelley McKamey; sons, Brad (Leslie), and Bruce (Erin); grandchildren, Christopher Myers (Mary Beth), Nathan McKamey, Jeff McKamey (Elaine), Katie Kelly (Jason), Aaron Oates (Maggie), Britian Oates (Joyce), Kelly Duffy (Ryan), Mari Oates, and Lindy Oates, and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers Richard and Charles, sisters Lorraine Soo and Ella Ohlinger and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Beal Prohaska and Nora McFarland and brothers John, Donald, Bernard, and Gerald.
