Curtis Carlson

On Saturday, January 23, 2021, Curtis E. Carlson, 97, of Carrboro, NC, embarked on his journey to join Bette and Cyndy. We wish him well and Godspeed.

Curtis will be laid to rest next to his wife, Bette, at the Moline Memorial Park Mausoleum, Moline, IL. Memorials may be made to Parkinson’s Research.

Curt was born December 16, 1923, in Moline, the son of Oscar – a Swedish immigrant – and Olga (Kron) Carlson. He married Bette Ingvall June 9, 1946, in Moline. Bette preceded him in death on March 2, 2010.  Also, Curt was preceded in death by his daughter, Cynthia Metcalf, his parents, and his brother, Ronald Carlson.

Curt graduated from Moline High School Class 1942. Upon graduating from Moline High School, Curtis enrolled at Augustana College in Rock Island. During World War II, Curtis served in the Merchant Marines. He was deployed to North Africa and Italy. His unit was assigned to the North Atlantic to support D-Day preparations. Before D-Day took place, the Merchant Marines were assigned to the Pacific supporting General McArthur’s return to the Philippines.

Upon receiving his Honorable Discharge from the Merchant Marines, Curtis entered the Tool and Die Maker Apprentice program at John Deere Wagon Works. For the next 37 years, Curtis honed his skills, working his way up to Tool and Die Maker Journeyman. He retired in 1988.

In retirement Curtis loved spending winters with Bette in Treasure Island, FL. Curtis was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline. He was also a member of the Viking Thor Lodge #9, Moline.

Curt is survived by his grandson Ian Metcalf, Charlotte, NC; and son-in-law, Orlando P Metcalf III, Carrboro, N.C.
