Donald Phelps

Donald B. Phelps, 91, of Moline, passed Sunday, June 30, 2019, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in Guttenberg, IA.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, IL.  Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Monday at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline, IL.  Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #246.  Memorials may be made to the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center (200 Hawkins Dr, Iowa City, IA 52242) or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (262 Danny Thomas Place Memphis, TN 38105).

Donald was born on October 16, 1927, in Moline, IL, the son of Burgess and Kathryn (Arnold) Phelps.  He married Mary Lou Kolb on February 19, 1949, at the First Presbyterian Church, Moline, IL.  She preceded him in death on February 28, 2017.  He was a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran and a member of the Moline VFW Lodge #2153 and the American Legion Post #246.  He retired as a cabinet maker at the former Bratton Cabinet Shop after 30 years.  He then went to work for the State of Illinois East Moline Correctional Center as a carpenter supervisor.  He enjoyed woodworking and making his family keepsake chests.

Survivors include his children, Donald M. (Donna) Phelps, Moline, IL, and Daniel M. (Sandy) Phelps, Omaha, NE; 4 grandchildren, Candice (Jeremy) Heider, Jackson, MO, Erin Phelps, Rock Island, IL, D.J. Phelps, Rock Island, IL; Andrew (Amy) Phelps, Guttenberg, IA; great grandsons, Maddux  Heider and Ayden  Phelps; step grandchildren, Jamie (Michael) Oldfather, Moline, IL, Ron (Sue) Tucker, Moline, IL,  Robin (Anton) Reginald, Omaha, NE, Amy (Aaron) Nelson, Normal, IL, Molly (Chris) York, Cambridge, IL; step granddaughter-in-law, Heather Elmore, LeClaire, IA; 19 step great grandchildren; sister, Mar-G Foreman, California.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother, Terry and a step grandson, Bradly Elmore.
