Duane "Sonny" Hagberg

September 15, 1933 — April 28, 2021

Duane “Sonny” Lyle Hagberg, 87, of Orion, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2021.

Private family services will be held and burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.  There will be no public service or visitation.  Memorials may be made to the Bridgeway, Inc., 137 E. College St., Kewanee, Illinois 61443.  In accordance with restrictions, attendees are expected to wear a face mask and observe social distancing.

He was born in Green Grove, Wisconsin on September 15, 1933, to Engner Hagberg and Ida Emma Hagberg Malmen.  He was the stepson of Clayton Malmen.  Sonny was a resident of Bridgeway House, Canton and Macomb, Illinois since 2003.  As he became older, Sonny was a resident of Heartland Health Care Center in Macomb, Illinois for 7 years.

In his younger years, Sonny was an avid bowler and even a pin setter.  Sonny previously assisted in his grandma Hagberg’s Eagle Lunch Restaurant in Moline.  He was a diehard Cubs fan and let everyone know it.  He enjoyed an ongoing Cubs/Cardinals rivalry with his roommate at Heartland, Jim Dodd.  Sonny also loved to “fiddle” with his many radios over the years, always searching for a Cubs game.  Sonny loved new shoes; they were always favorite Christmas and birthday presents.

Sonny was always smiling as he made his daily wheelchair visits around Heartland to see his friends.  Unfortunately, Covid-19 changed his routine permanently.  Sonny survived Covid for 9 months.  Residual effects contributed to his health decline in recent months.  Sonny was a brave man who never complained about anything.  He was a kind and gentle soul.  Most of all, Sonny loved his family, kept many family photos in his room, and always made introductions to everyone.

Sonny faced every challenge with bravery and grace.  He always was able to bounce back from danger or misfortune and keep on going.  That is why his sister, Lorraine, and his niece, Carol Ann, nicknamed him “The Energizer Bunny”.  It seemed he was invincible.  However, as poor health appeared to be winning the battle, his family watched in awe as Sonny worked hard to get better, saying, “I’m going to be alright!”

Sonny was preceded in death by his mother, stepfather, father, brother-in-law, Bob Carsell and step brother-in-law, Bob Ickes.

He is survived by his sister, Lorraine Carsell, stepsister, Kathryn Ickes, niece, Carol Ann Gellerman (Marc), nephew, John Carsell (Debbie), step nieces, Vivki Churchill (Dave), Diane Leuke (Pat), Karen Ickes, Barb Ickes; great nieces,  Aimee Peters (Jeff), Rachel Martinez (Manny), and Kimberly Schwartzlose, great nephew, Denny McCallum (Kelley), great great nieces, Olivia and Emerson Peters, Mila Ballinger and Lucie Martinez, great great nephews, Thomas McCallum, Greyson Ballinger and Emmitt Schwartzlose, step great nephew, Dustin Moens (Emma), step great great nephews, Dain and Atticus Moens; half-brothers, Patrick Hagberg, Michael Hagberg, Ivar Hagberg; half-sister, Laura Turley.  Sonny is definitely watching his Cub games with Bob and Bob in heaven.

A special “Thank You” from Sonny’s family goes to the Bridgeway program, the administrators and staff of Heartland Health Care Center, the doctors and nurses of McDonough District Hospital, Macomb, Illinois and Esterdahl Mortuary for their excellent care and concern for Sonny.

Memories may be shared on the tribute wall.
