Elayne Hogan, 96, of Moline, passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at her home.
Memorial Mass will be held at 10 am., Saturday, May 14, 2022, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline. Private burial will be held at the National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., is assisting the family.
Elayne was born on February 26, 1926, to Arvid and Edla Swanson. She lived in Moline, Illinois. Elayne had two brothers, Vernon, Carl “Culley” and a sister, Mae. She attended Moline High School, Class of 1944. While in high school she was employed by Walgreens Drug Store and later in life she was employed by Farmall Credit Union and then United Airlines.
In 1947, Elayne married William Hogan and in 1948 she gave birth to their daughter Marcia. Elayne was an avid golf fan and she loved to watch golf on tv and cheer on any Swedish golfer. She worked as a volunteer at the John Deere Golf Tournament and chauffeured the players as needed while they were here. She worked the tournament for over twenty years. Elayne was very proud of her Swedish heritage. She was a member of the American Legion, the Viking Club and other organizations. She was a big fan of the military as her husband was a veteran. She was on record as the oldest woman to have flown in a B17 flying fortress military airplane. She was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed watching a variety of sports.
Elayne loved her home and really enjoyed her neighbors and neighborhood get togethers. For the last 10 months she lived at Amber Ridge (Cedarhurst) Assisted Living where she met new friends, enjoyed activities, and listened to musicians that played the piano there. Elayne loved gospel music and her favorite artists were the Gaither’s and the Statler Brothers. She enjoyed church and was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.
Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Vernon and Karen Swanson; brother-in-law, Jim Hogan; nieces, Lynn Baker, Dorothy Yonke and Carol Tuominen; and nephew, Brian Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Marcia Surra-Hogan; husband, William; sister, Mae Johnson; brother, Culley Swanson; and nephew, Jeff Johnson.
Those left to honor her memory are special friends, Jim and Anna Catour, Ronald Ostrom, godson and his wife, Randy and LaDonna Jensen, and all the special friends and families who were part of her 96-year journey.
